On February 17, 2009, as mandated by law, televisions nationwide must switch from transmitting analog television signal digital television signal (DTV). United States (USA) move to all- Digital OTA broadcasts on the said date.
Those who are using analog over-the-air antenna (OTA) or rabbit ears will no longer receive OTA programming or OTA broadcast unless they subscribe to satellite service or cable service.
PRIMARY REASONS WHY US LAW IMPLEMENTED THE DTV TRANSITION
- free up bandwidth emergency and wireless communication - digital signals are more efficient than analog signals
CONVERTER BOX
A converter box will allow people who have OTA to receive OTA broadcasts after the digital transition. Converter boxes cost range from $40 - $70.
FEDERAL COUPON
The US Federal government will issue two coupons per US household, each coupon is worth $40. To help offset the cost of the converter box, the US government will provide 2 coupons per household to go towards the purchase of a converter box.
TAKE NOTE:
- Coupons can only be used towards the purchase of a converter box
- Coupons cannot be combined so it should be 1 coupon per converter box
- Coupons will expire in 90 days from the day they were issued and expired coupons cannot be used or re-used.
ARE YOU AFFECTED WITH THIS DTV TRANSITION?
If you subscribed to cable service or satellite service like Comcast, Time warner, Dish Network, DirectTV, InDemand, and etc. you are not affected because you are already receiving digital signals. So to those US residents who are still using OTA or rabbit ear in getting programming or local broadcast subscribe to a local cable TV provider or satelliteTV provider.
