   My son just got his first laptop and a WRT54G2 Linksys router. We used the disc that came with the router and it says it has configured but no internet connection is detected. I have cable broadband with my desktop computer. I disconnected the modem from my computer and plugged that cable into the “internet” slot on the router. I then used the blue cable that came with the router to connect the router (slot 1) to his laptop. Why can we not get internet connection still?

   Connection is good. the cable which is connected from modem to your computer should be disconnected and it should be connected on the “INTERNET” port on the router and the other cable connect it to the laptop to any ethernet port (PORT 1, 2 3, or 4) on the router. Go to control panel, network connection, and then right click “LOCAL AREA CONNECTION” and select “STATUS”. Then go to “SUPPORT” tab. Select Details. Check the ip address, default gateway, and DNS. Is the ip address something like 192.168.1.x? How about the DNS? And can you tell me your Internet Service Provider? Because sometimes your internet company has different setup that is needed to put on the router’s settings.    I contacted Tech support and I have pasted the instructions she gave me below. I followed everything but still could not connect. I connacted chat again and she told me to go though process again. I did and still nothing.

   Kathrena C. (24616): Here are the steps you need to follow.
   Kathrena C. (24616):
   Before doing these steps, I suggest that you reset first the router so that it will be set first to default settings.
   To reset the router, please follow these simple steps:
   1. Press and the hold the reset button, located at the back of the router, for 30 seconds.
   2. Then unplug and power cord of the router, wait for 10 seconds, and power it back on.
   Just follow these simple steps to configure the router:
   1. Connect the PC to the port one of the router. The modem should not be connected yet to the Internet port or WAN port of the router.
   2. Please open up Internet Explorer and type 192.168.1.1 in the Address bar.
   3. Just skip user name and type admin as the password.
   4. Click on the MAC Address Clone sub tab and click on “Clone your PC’s MAC” then save the settings.
   5. Go back to the Basic sub tab and Look for the LAN IP which is 192.168.1.1.
   6. Change the IP address to 192.168.2.1 then save the settings.
   7. Turn off all the devices for two minutes. Connect the modem to the Internet port or WAN port of the router. ( the modem, the Linksys router and the computer)
   8. Finally, power them back on. (Starting from the modem then the router and lastly your PC).
   9. You can now access the Internet.

   @debbie
   The linksys tech tried to reset first the router. Let’s take it step by step.
   Are you able to access the setup page? If yes, look on the Basic setup tab. What is the Router’s LAN IP ADDRESS?
   And then go to STATUS tab on the LINKSYS ROUTERS SETUP PAGE. what is the DNS or WAN IP ADDRESS there? Take note of the details on the Basic Setup and Status page because we are going to try to ping those numbers. “Ping” which means test if you those IP addresses or DNS can give a reply.

   to david

   No need for disk. You just have to plug your router to your modem and access your router’s setup page. Make sure you know if you are connected to DSL or CABLE PROVIDER.
