“What is the difference between port triggering and port forwarding? When will I use port forwarding and port triggering?”

These are the questions that you want to know if ever you want to connect to a server or if ever you want others to access your server. Take a look at this:

port triggering and port forwardingPort Triggering sets up the router so that PCs will be able to access public services outside the network or on the Internet, such as web servers, FTP servers, e-mail servers, game servers or other Internet applications.

Port Forwarding sets up public services on your network such as web servers, FTP servers, e-mail servers, or other specialized Internet applications. When users send this type of request to your network via the Internet, the router will forward these requests to the appropriate PC.

* For example, you want to access a game (World of Warcraft). You send a request to access a game server. That is what we called Port Triggering. That request will be forwarded to the game server by the router. The process by which the request to the Game Server is sent by the router is called Port Forwarding.

* Another example of when to use Port Triggering is when you can’t download files while you are connected to the router.
